Located on the island of Sant’Antioco in south-western Sardinia, this cooperative winery was founded in 1949 and has been entirely dedicated to championing the native Carignano grape since its inception. The grapes, supplied by the cooperative’s members, are sourced from a combined vineyard area of 300 hectares.
The oldest Carignano vines are over 70 years old and thrive in sandy soils, deliberately kept to low yields (around 40 to 50 quintals per hectare) to guarantee the utmost fruit quality.
Since antiquity, Carignano on the island of Sant’Antioco has been cultivated ungrafted on its own rootstocks, trained using the traditional Latin bush vine (alberello) system.
These pre-phylloxera vineyards represent an inestimable historical and cultural heritage, as they are among the rare few to have survived the devastating pest that swept across Europe from the Americas in the late 19th century.
